UK commander rejects abuse and killing of detainees in Iraq

A senior British military officer has claimed reports that British forces abused and killed detainees after a gun battle in Iraq in ۲۰۰۴ are “baseless rumors”.

UK commander rejects abuse and killing of detainees in Iraq

Colonel Adam Griffiths, who was a company commander in the First Battalion at the time, was speaking to al-Sweady public inquiry that looks into accusations that British soldiers murdered 20 unarmed civilians at Camp Abu Naji in south east Iraq and abused others.
The abuse apparently took place after the battle called Danny Boy at a British military checkpoint near Majar al-Kabir on May 14, 2004.
The commander claimed he did not have information suggesting the detainees were abused or murdered.
Griffiths also claimed that the injuries sustained by the detainees were the “devastating impact” of modern weapons systems and nothing “inconsistent with battlefield injuries”.
This comes as Iraqi victims’ lawyers says the British soldiers severely beat them with the International Committee of the Red Cross joining in to voice concerns about the treatment they faced.
