Iranian presidential hopeful Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has underscored the importance of a president’s adherence to the law and constitutional principles.

Qalibaf underlines need to adhere to law

“The elected president who registers and takes oath [of office] in accordance with the constitution should not circumvent the law.
However, he should oblige himself to fully observe the constitution as [something which has] the final say,” Qalibaf said on Thursday, speaking in the Iranian western city of Sanandaj.

Qalibaf underlined the need for promotion of social and economic justice in all parts of the country, adding, “In distribution of social opportunities, all religions, tendencies and tastes should be [treated as] equal and no group should have priority over the others.
” The presidential hopeful, who is currently the mayor of Tehran, also noted that he does not make empty promises which he will not be able to fulfill.
Qalibaf is a member of the Coalition of Three, which also comprises Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, a prominent lawmaker, and Ali-Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
The coalition will pick one of its members with the highest approval rating as its nominee for the June 14th election.
A total of 686 individuals signed up for the race during the registration period, which began on Tuesday March 7 at Iran’s Interior Ministry and ended on Saturday March 11.
The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election, and the Guardian Council vets the hopefuls, approving or not approving them for official candidacy.
