President Calls NPT Essential for Ending Dispute over Iran’s N. Issue

ranian President Hassan Rouhani said an eventual settlement of the West’s standoff over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program could be reached in a short time span, provided that the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) serves as a basis for the nuclear talks.

“If the Non-Proliferation Treaty is considered the basis of the work by the negotiators in the nuclear issue, matters could be resolved immediately and in a short time,” Rouhani said in a meeting with President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso in Switzerland on Thursday.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 44th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Swiss city of Davos.

President Rouhani also hoped for the immediate resumption of the nuclear talks between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) over the Islamic Republic’s peaceful nuclear program.

Describing the process of achieving a final consensus on Iran’s nuclear case as “tough”, the Iranian chief executive argued that the nuclear negotiations can produce results immediately if the both sides show determination.

On November 24, 2013, Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as P5+1 or E3+3) signed a six-month deal on Tehran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Geneva after several rounds of tight negotiations.

Based on the interim deal (the Joint Plan of Action), the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and to impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran's decision to freeze parts of its nuclear activities and to allow more inspection of its nuclear facilities.

The Geneva deal, which has come into effect since January 20, also stipulates that over the course of six months, Iran and the six countries will draw up a comprehensive nuclear deal which will lead to a lifting of the whole sanctions on Iran.

Iranian officials also insist that the Geneva agreement recognizes Iran’s right to enrichment, and maintain that it is their prerogative to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes because it has been granted by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Article 4 of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty guarantees countries the right to develop the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

It stipulates that nothing in this treaty shall be interpreted as affecting the inalienable right of all the parties to the treaty to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

End message.
